Rough, fair breeze and quite chilly

Today is special. It’s my 17th birthday! I was “lucky” enough to have the late night watch, which meant I was awake when the clocked struck twelve. My pals rushed me over to lab the minute it was past twelve to show off a new zooplankton they found, but all I found as I opened the curtain to a dimly lit laboratory was not a rare new breed of zooplankton. A piece of corn bread covered in a thick layer of Nutella and the sweet symphony of “happy birthday Ollie!” The smile on my face the moment I walked in was humongous. A pretty darn good way to start the day off at midnight if you ask me! The happiness and joy of friendship cut through the foul cool breeze that filled in the Sekonnet River that night.  After a well-deserved night’s sleep because our watch was relieved early I woke up to the Cramer under way and land far from sight. What a feeling it is to finally be under way due to some challenging weather holding us back before. What a feeling it was to be on the quarter deck with a warm cup of tea and looking out into the seemingly endless seas.

Squeezing in one more nap before another late night watch, I felt unstoppable. I thought my birthday celebrations were surely over and the cornbread Nutella thing was the thought that counted. I was called below deck to only find the whole ships company in the main salon singing in perfect unison, and before my very eyes I was presented with a triple layered trifle cake with strawberry compote and kiwis topped with custard Italian meringue and freshly whipped cream! Galley team was quite clever to secretly find out my favorite desert on the planet! It sure was a birthday to remember and it was an experience like no other.

This is Ollie Downes signing off with a big grin on his face and a full tummy of cake!

Best wishes to my loving family - My Mom, Dad and my little brother.  Team Downes! p.s loved the birthday card!

I’m so proud of you my son. I’m sorry we weren’t there to celebrate your birthday with you but I take great comfort in the knowledge that you are right where you need to be.

Soak it all in Ollie - work hard & have the time of your life!
