At its annual conference last weekend in Philadelphia, Tall Ships America presented SEA with the prestigious award of 2014 Sea Education Program of the Year. This prize is "awarded to a program offered by a current member of Tall Ships America which has significantly contributed to the educational credibility of programs under sail."

2014 marked the launch of The Global Ocean, our newest undergraduate SEA Semester study abroad program. The Global Ocean seeks to explore and document measurable changes in the world’s oceans from the platform of our two sailing research vessels, the SSV Corwith Cramer and the SSV Robert C. Seamans. To support the learning goals of this program, SEA charted new academic courses in waters previously unexplored by the organization, visiting a myriad of new destinations including Ireland, France, Portugal, Spain, the Canary Islands, Fiji, and New Zealand.

By virtue of these advancements in both cruise tracks and curriculum, SEA was nominated for this award for its success in bringing even more international attention to sail training, educational programs at sea, and human impact on the world’s oceans.

Peg Brandon, President of SEA, said, "The global impact of this educational program cannot be underestimated. SEA Semester: The Global Ocean contributes directly to the work of the Ocean Health Index and its supporting organizations. It has also facilitated the development of international research collaborations, relationships with U.S. Foreign Service offices, visibility of American tall ships in communities across the world, and the overall credibility of educational programs under sail."

SEA Semester: The Global Ocean will next be offered in Fall 2015 with a choice of voyages in Western Europe or New Zealand. You may also follow the current Spring 2015 New Zealand voyage here.
