SEA Currents: Corwith Cramer

Magic Carpet Ride

After watch debrief.
The past two weeks have been a magic carpet ride on a magic boat. Perfect conditions, broad reaching to running in 20-25 kt trades, blue skies and seas, bright moon which is now waning allowing us to view an amazing sky full of stars. Last night we took a star tour led by First Mate Scott, with a spectacular view of the Andromeda Galaxy- the farthest object visible to the naked eye , 2.5 million light years away. In all my years of sailing I've never had a string of such perfect sailing days- and it promises to continue!
I am so impressed by the professionalism of the staff, their teaching abilities (each and every one of them) and the constant attention to safety. The steady progress the students are making is not by accident. They are nurtured at every step along the way. I particularly appreciate the way they are handled individually by the mates. Everyone is different but all will end up at the same place. It's clear the overall approach is derived from years of experience.
The Cramer is indeed a magic boat. It's a perfect vessel for our purposes. She sails great and yet is a wonderful platform for doing the science that is done twice a day. Some might think her Spartan, but to me she is spacious and almost luxurious compared to many of the smaller boats I have sailed.
For me this is a trip I have long dreamed of- a transatlantic passage with a boat full of great people. But it has the added aspect of being an educational voyage, combining both sailing and science. For me, and my interests, it's a perfect combination. I feel very fortunate to have been allowed to join the crew. I can't jump around like I used to be able to do but still can stand a trick at the helm and serve as lookout on the bow at night at times of high work load for the watch.
I will be proud to call myself a member of C-263 in all future SEA gatherings!
Best wishes to friends and family who are following the blog. Believe me when I say I'm having a ball. Miss you all but will see you soon as this magic ride will end faster than I'd like.

Hey Ken,
Enjoying all the blogs as I follow your trip. Just read your Nov. 30 entry. You said something I said about it the other day. I said it is the perfect combination of things you most enjoy: sailing, science and teaching/education. Knew you’d be having a great time. Glad to follow you on your adventure.
