Reporting live from the Robert C. Seamans! Guess who is leading the troops this dawn watch as J-WO (Junior Watch Officer)? THE SAVAGE as my fellow teammates like to call me (it is also my last name). This entails overseeing the deck and wellbeing of the ship along with making sure hourly checks (boat checks, engine check, navigation) are being done. Who knew that this would be the most challenging part of this program for me personally? If you have seen the recent movie Moana, maybe you remember the part in the beginning when she never sailed before in her life and is suddenly figuring out how the sail works by herself. Well, that's me except I actually have people teaching me how to sail.
So imagine now this person leading her watch with teammates who probably know so much more. It all turns out OK. How? This is why I love my team. Although I had no idea what I was doing when I ordered "hands to strike the jib" or "hands to strike the tops'l" it was my team that was doing the hard work. They had picked up what I was missing, including which lines to haul, ease, etc.
I also believe it is important you know what was said in our watch so here are some often-heard quotes for you.
"FOMO" (Fear Of Missing Out) or "FOMOFO" (Fear Of Missing Out For Others)
"Good watch you guys, we did all the things."
~ Chief Mate Cassie Sleeper
"And I was never allowed back ."
"Linda (Lydia) Wasmah ."
"Okay, Eileen, you be the flake master"
~ Elsbeth Pendleton-Wheeler
Now imagine Neville Longbottom in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: Awkward, kind of incompetent, makes all these minor mistakes. But, look what happened to him come Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Major change! I am not saying I am Neville in the Deathly Hallows; I am more like a Neville in The Goblet of Fire. I have a lot to learn regarding sailing but I have come so far from the (long) bottom. I look forward to coming home and sharing how much I learned about sailing and will make the most of these last few days we have together.
P.S. Father, you are welcome for the Harry Potter reference. Samuel, I have FOMOFY (Fear Of Missing Out For You).
