SEA Currents: SEASCape
July 21, 2017
It’s hard to believe another SEASCape class has already come and gone from the SEA campus. Just three short weeks ago, the RAs and I welcomed 28 high school students from across the country and around the world to our little home here on Cape Cod. Little did they know what this program had in store for them! The amount of personal growth that occurred these past 21 days is astonishing – many of these students went from timid and unsure of being away from home to independent, strong leaders in their community here.
Sure, the students were aware that they would be taking part in classes and would have homework daily… but they did not know that they would also learn critical community building skills! Every day the students were responsible for helping me get meals out and cleaned up, cleaning every inch of their homes, and organizing their free time. They learned the characteristics of leadership and teamwork in a unique environment, and I could not be more proud of them! We celebrated their accomplishments by watching the sunset on the beach, toasting marshmallows over a (safely contained within a charcoal barbeque) bonfire, and watching a movie in the beloved map room.
The students of SEASCape Session 1 2017 graduated and became official alumni of SEA Semester today. I hope they take everything that they learned during their summer here and apply it to the rest of their high school careers. If I could give them all one piece of advice, it would be to enjoy the rest of high school while they can, and that while the entire idea of college can be scary and overwhelming, IT WILL ALL BE OKAY. I hope to see them back in a couple years as undergraduates studying abroad on one of our ships!
Fair winds to your next adventures, SEASCapers!
