Warm and sunny greetings from the Corwith Cramer,
We have formally concluded both our science and deck practical examinations. These exams have provided an excellent insight into how far we have come and how much more there is yet to learn. There are increased responsibilities and expectations of us that come as both a relief and a welcome challenge. Indeed, we find ourselves immersed in a completely new language that we are rapidly adapting to on the Cramer. As over half our voyage has sailed on by, this new way of life will make the return to land a strange prospect. Nevertheless, the community has truly united and is running like a well-oiled machine. In regards to science, the focus has shifted on formulating our proposals into actual scientific reports. In two days, we finalize our student sampling and begin interpreting all of the data thats been collected.
Today we had the good graces to celebrate Local Apparent Mardi Gras. This silly romp provided an excellent bit of fun for the whole ship. Costumes were donned, we played Jeopardy, and all of us had an overall good time. The whole ship participated in this event, and we collectively let out our pent up frivolity. Mardi Gras on the Cramer also let all of the watches spend time with one another. Often, we are so engrossed in sleeping, eating, and sailing that we dont get to spend time outside of our watch.
On a personal note, this experience has given me a new appreciation for the comforts of land. Though I‘m a history major, I can appreciate the complexities and intricacies of the science were studying. Though the physically raw nature of sailing is demanding, overcoming and succeeding is extremely rewarding. I realize that Im not the ideal sailor, but the experience has been, nevertheless one of extreme worth and cause for self-introspection. I look forward to our time at Union Island, and some snorkeling in Tobago Cays!
