After a night of motorsailing, the silence of simply sailing is refreshing. We are under the four lowers with the JT, but there is a new sail set, called the fisherman! It is difficult to set up and only used in light winds. The excitement has been high because it is the first new sail that we have set. Also, today Chuck made the announcement that we have entered tropical waters! Woot!
This morning A-watch was lucky enough to have sleep of kings. We got off watch at 0300 and then we did not need to wake up until 1000. Shortly after, we had an hour of history with Craig. We found a shady spot on the foredeck and talked about the movement of people, resources, and information throughout history in the Caribbean. An hour well spent! We saw a pod of dolphins when we came up on deck for class, which made class awesome, even though we had our first and last lab practical. We were tested on the skills that we had developed during the first few weeks, such as setting up a neuston net, wire deployments, and generally knowing whats going on in the lab. The extra credit was tying a bowline behind our backs on the first try, only Mo succeeded, go Mo!
I have been becoming much more comfortable with the operation of the ship and I cannot wait to shadow our mate, Kevin! As a shadow, we get to follow the mate around and learn how to keep the watch running smoothly. Today, I was Maias shadow in the lab. I learned that the important part of running the lab is to make sure tasks and hourlies get done, but also to communicate with the deck. We tell them about deployments and we also check in to see if they need help sail handling.
I can’t believe we are already almost halfway through this fantastic voyage. Even though I miss the luxuries of land, I am definitely not ready to go back.
A shout out to Mom, Dad, Catherine, and Ashley! I got to read the article about the maiden voyage of Cramer where Dad is described as looking more like Van Gogh than a captain, haha. Love to you all!
From Kyle, a shout out to the lil Phizzy
From Becky, Deb, I wish you were in my pocket!
From Janet, a shout out with lots of love to Marissa Shaw (seconded by Trevor)
