Beach Cleanup & Seaweed Snacks

SEA Semester

Above: Georgia and Maddie disentangle some rope while Mairead and Ethan record data. Below: Abby checks out some seaweed and critters found during the beach cleanup.

After a lovely cereal breakfast, we headed over to the Madden Center for Oceans & Society class with Kate. Today we learned about container ships and their effect on the oceans and the economy. Next was Oceanography class with Jess where we talked about the many major issues that face our oceans as well as possible solutions.

One major problem is plastic pollution which led us to our next activity: beach cleanup. Despite having visited Racing Beach many times during free time, we were surprised to find so much pollution along the shore. For our evening activity, we learned about different kinds of local seaweed and what they are used in. To our delight, we got to eat ice cream which contains carrageenan seaweed: delicious! All in all a great day!
