Beach Cleanup and Sample Collection

Grace Green & Ben Moya, Oregon Episcopal School &Teaneck High School

SEA Semester

The quadrat that the biology group uses to collect their data.

First thing today we had a lesson on climate change and discussed on how it has changed the ocean and the environment. We also discussed the social and political impacts of climate change, we saw a documentary about the current disputes on the fishing and oil industries in countries including Norway, Ireland, and Canada.

In the afternoon we went to Racing Beach and cleaned up trash, such as plastics, glass, and fishing gear. We recorded data based on the types of waste we found and the quantity of each type. One group collected over three pounds of trash during the cleanup. After we cleaned up the beach, we took biological, chemical, geological, and physical data of the beach.
