Awesome Surprises

Adrynne Jones, Eastern Michigan University

SEA Semester

Adrynne finding a fish inside the stomach of a Monkfish.

Prior to this trip I had no idea that PEP or even Woods Hole existed. Luckily, I was told about this opportunity by my Chemistry professor back in Michigan, and I’m am extremely grateful that I’m able to have this experience. From the beginning I have been surprised by not only the knowledge I’m gaining but also the connections I’m making. I was surprised when coming here at how close I’ve become to the other 15 PEP students within the first three weeks and I couldn’t be more excited for what’s to come.

I also have started working with my mentors. Working on Monkfish has been my first real research experience within the marine sciences and I’m loving every minute. I have had fish guts on my favorite shirts and have stood up for hours removing vertebra. It may sound unappealing but it has only solidified my plans to continue in marine life studies. So far, this program has opened me up to opportunities, friendships, and the chance to really see if I want to continue with this path and for that I am thankful. I plan on learning even more, making more connections, and giving an update on how I feel once I near the end. I’m not one for surprises but these few so far have been awesome.
