Early this morning, we helped to set the sails and prepare to reel in the anchor. Though we are all still inexperienced, it's so thrilling to know that we're genuinely contributing to the success of the ship's voyage. Leaving the dock yesterday afternoon was our first real sample of the initiative and responsibility each of us must assume, and while it may have been stressful and slightly spontaneous, the adrenaline that came with it was invigorating. It's incredible how quickly I forgot about my freezing fingers and wet clothes when the order to untie the fenders sounded through the rain. Minutes after our successful departure, we sailed past the Statue of Liberty; a breathtaking ending to the tension.
Now that the ship is on its way, our tasks fall much more into routine, though we are constantly still learning new and exciting things along the way. I learned how to plot the ship's current position on a map, and Captain Rick showed me how to check the accuracy using radar. Just a few minutes ago we had our first experience using the gimbled tables to eat. It's so disorienting to see all the food rest perfectly still on a table that's
tilted at nearly 45°. Our second day has been very busy so far, but it's clear to see that there is an endless amount of exciting things for us to learn and experience on this trip.
