A Day in New Bedford
After a wonderful breakfast of chocolate pancakes, we students boarded a bus to the town of New Bedford. The first stop was at Bergie's Seafood where we got to see how fish are processed after being unloaded from ships. The next stop was at the Seamen's Bethel, a church where sailors lost at sea are honored with plaques and relics from their days in the wild oceans. Crossing the street, we entered the famed New Bedford Whaling Museum.
There we learned about the days of whaling and whales in general from an enthusiastic sperm whale expert named Tom. After a lovely packed lunch we walked down to the Buzzard's Bay Coalition building and learned about the bay's watershed and its environmental issues. The final destination of our field trip extravaganza was to the New Bedford Harbor for Ice Cream and a lesson on the opperation of life boats and the fishing techniques of the other ships. We also saw a ship taking ice from a building specializing only in ice making. It was a information filled day of sunshine and learning!
