WHOI Lab Visit
Today, we went to the WHOI lab, located in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. We all took a tour of the lab, and practiced soldering wire, and testing the resistance. It was really interesting to hear from different engineers to hear how soldering wires work. We also heard about how solar panels work and how to measure the volts. This had inspired a few of us to possibly become engineers, as this was a very interesting presentation.
We also had the opportunity to visit a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) lab. ROVs are probes used for exploration and sampling that can be operated by a scientist from a distance. This lab helped develop famous WHOI ROVs like the Jason probe. While we were there, the scientists showed us the ROVs from the SeaPerch program. The SeaPerch program is educational program that aims to teach kids about ROVs by helping them construct one. We got to pilot one in the lab. We had controls for up, down, left and right. Using those controls, we had to try to attach a magnet to a light-up stick. It was a really amazing opportunity, and we all learned a lot from it!
