This is what the bow of the Robert C. Seamans looks like from the very top of the foremast. It was really only here that I realized just how tiny we are, bobbing like a cork on the huge, huge earth. But the strangest thing about going aloft for me was how calm and peaceful I felt—until I was back on the ground, and my legs turned into jelly from the adrenaline I didn’t know I had. Lots of things on the ship are like that: most of the time life out here just goes on in the normal way, until every so often something comes along and reminds you that our life is anything but normal right now. Those moments are powerful. Props to Winton for going the highest of all of us, and major props to Susie (pictured far below on the bowsprit) for letting us take her camera aloft! Mom: I wore a harness and clipped in, you can stop worrying now.
Below: Deckhand Katherine and student Lauren S on the course yard. Much love to the fam and friends. 7 days until we can talk via the internets again!
