SEA Currents: SSV Robert C. Seamans
October 12, 2019
Preparing for sea
41° 31’ N x 070° 39’ W
Ship’s Heading, Speed and sail plan:
Comfortably alongside Dyers Dock, Woods Hole, MA
Typical fall weather in New England, cool, cloudy, and breezy thanks to a nor’easter just offshore Cape Cod.
Excitement builds as we spend the day preparing for sea. All aboard our eager to head out to sea… however, before we cast off the dock lines the professional crew must pass along some important safety information and train our new recruits in the many customs and skills required of sailor-scientists.
Today began with a hearty meal of egg sandwiches and fresh fruit and was followed with a healthy dose of learning. In the morning students learned how to safely handle lines under strain, how to safely deploy scientific equipment using the hydrowinch, and how to thoroughly conduct a boat check – a walk-through of all the spaces on the Cramer to look, listen and smell for any signs of trouble.
The afternoon was spent learning individual responsibilities during potential emergency scenarios such as Man-Over-Board, Fire, and Abandon Ship. Every student has a specific duty – some handle sails, while others keep a lookout, and others deploy safety equipment or help with hoses, etc, etc.
A busy day of learning was topped off with a warm, tasty meal of vegetable and chicken curry with rice and a fresh salad bursting with color.
Night watches begin tonight, so for most of the crew, we are turning in early.
To family and friends onshore I wish you sweet dreams.
