SEA Currents: SSV Robert C. Seamans
May 05, 2018
Raiatea, French Polynesia
Ship’s Heading & Speed
This morning we left the dock in the community of Uturoa, Raiatea and motored through the lagoon between the islands of Raiatea and Tahaa to scout out an anchor spot so the ships company could go snorkeling. The channel wove between reefs through a gradient of blue glassy water. The smell of tropical flowers was strong in the air.
We dropped anchor and then took small boat runs around a pearl farm and through moored sailboats towards two small islands separated from each other by a channel. A path from the beach on the smaller island took us on a five minute walk to the other side of the island where Bora Bora stood over us with a watchful eye. The entry to the channel was over a path of worn coral and once we jumped into the channel we were engulfed by a whole new world. The flow of the current carried us gently through a garden of coral and tropical fish, giant clams, monster sea cucumbers, and even an octopus. The water was clear and with streams of fractionated sunlight illuminating the reds and oranges of the coral and the rainbow hued sea creatures. The fish weren’t afraid of us, they seemingly welcomed us. All you really heard was the crisp crackling of unseen snapping shrimp.
I have that feeling you get after spending the day playing at the beach and eating platefuls of vegetables because that is what happened today. My eyelids are heavy, my muscles are relaxed, my speech languid, and there is a comfortable layer of salt on my skin. I got a little too much sun today which I’m ok with. It’s night now and there is a warm breeze and the air is cooler and refreshing. It was a busy day with small boat runs and snorkeling and sail handling, but time slowed down today. My body and my soul feel worked and nourished.
