Souls on Board

While I woke up at 1020 this morning, the day really began at 0000 (midnight). Leaving our permit zone, we could at last deploy the neuston net into a sea of bioluminescent organisms after our third gybe of the evening. On campus around 1245 I can usually be found writing an English or Poli Sci paper in a corner of the arts building, but last night I stood with my watchmates on the bowsprit furling the jib (aka folding it into a taco shape for storage) beneath the stars.

At school I have minimal free time to read. While life as a student and crewmember at sea is rigorous, we do find time now and then to sit on top of the doghouse and relax under the sails. Besides holding on to the roof or viewing a pod of dolphins off the bow, on the Seamans I lack the distractions I find at home. There are no texts, notifications, and emails pinging our phones - it's amazing. At this point, you have a pretty good sense of our daily life, so here are some of the books we are reading while sitting under the sun off-watch.

Me: The Luminaries, Eleanor Catton
Anna C: Nixon
Anna J: A Game of Thrones: Feast for Crows, George R. R. Martin
Maddy S: The Lord of the Rings
Erin Adams: The Light Between Oceans
Adam T: Dune
Austin S: All the Light We Cannot See
Cullen G: I, Claudius, Robert Graves
Peyten S: Just Kids, Patti Smith
Matt: Huckleberry Finn
Elsbeth: The Signature of All Things, Elizabeth Gilbert

Our avid on-deck reading is in part thanks to the excellent weather thus far. A+ choice trading winter term for a summer at sea in New Zealand.
