Another Day in Nuku Hiva
Taiohae Bay, Nuku Hiva
Course & Speed
Sunny with some showers
Hello Family, Friends and followers of the S-252 blog,
Today was our fifth day anchored in Nuku Hiva; there were a couple of things that needed to be taken care of before going back out to sea so the crew decided to stay one more day in this beautiful place. It was a serene day aboard Seamans as students caught up on sleep and homework, and some of us started to learn arts of the sailor: expanding our knowledge of knots, making bracelets, and cutting and shaping sail canvas to make handcrafts.
As we prepare for our 2000 mile passage to Hawaii, today also served as an opportunity for reflection. Being an active member aboard Seamans has been the most mentally and physically challenging experience I’ve ever faced, but it is also the most rewarding and beautiful thing I’ve done. Being at sea and serving the ship’s and shipmates’ needs before attending your own makes me think about how great it would be to extrapolate this behavior to our lives on land: Earth being our only ship and our fellow humans our shipmates.
Some might say that we are out of our element, but somehow I feel there is no other place I would like to be. Despite my hands being covered in blisters and my muscles sore, every day I go to my bunk with a smile in my face, anxious about what adventures lie beyond the horizon, and grateful to all the people that have touched my life in one way or another and have given me the opportunity to be here.
Tomorrow we set sails again, adventure and knowledge awaits. In the meantime, I’m going back on deck to look at the stars and play music with my shipmates, my friends, my family.
Buen viento y buena mar.
Papa, Mama, Bibi, Caro, Cami, Lina y amigos: gracias por todo, los amo.
