Welcome to the SEA Colgate Benton Scholars program blog! I am happy to report that all 18 Colgate University participants (16 students and their professors Amy Leventer and Jonathan Levine) safely arrived in Brooklyn and boarded the Corwith Cramer at 1400 this afternoon. After moving into their bunks and donning their foul weather gear (Brooklyn gave them a rainy welcome), orientation to the ship began. The participants held initial meetings with their watch groups and then completed 40-minute watch rotations to learn about the science lab, the engine room, and how to do a boat check. Orientation rounds were punctuated by delicious afternoon snack and dinner; as the students are already discovering, we eat very well here on the Cramer. Everyone will get a good night’s sleep tonight, in preparation for continuing orientation tomorrow morning, transiting to a nearby anchorage tomorrow afternoon, and heading offshore on Tuesday morning. Today has been a long day, but a good one. Speaking on behalf of the entire professional crew, we look forward to sailing with this enthusiastic group of Colgate students.
