We left St. Croix yesterday and bounced over some waves to St. John, arriving at about 10:00 this morning! Today C watch was on from 7:00 am until 1:00 pm, during which we gybed 4 times, struck and furled all the sails, took water samples (for SCIENCE!), and anchored in St. John. Everyone on board has stood watch a couple times now, meaning we have all had 6-hour shifts either in the science lab, galley, or on deck. I’ve decided that standing on the bow (clipped in with a harness, don’t worry Mom) is my new favorite thing. Bow watch is like a roller coaster except saltier and you actually feel like you’re flying, and you can poorly sing any Moana song your heart desires with nobody to hear you. Some of us, including yours truly, are finding the waves and movement of the ship to be more foe than friend, however I feel that I am relatively friendly and will fix that relationship soon.
Today we took a short hike to an old sugar plantation called on St. John. Craig gave a great lecture on the history of this particular island in relation to sugar as we sat by the sugar mill ruins and some extremely blue water. We also spent time capturing the scenery in our journals, with Victoria Smith who taught our illustration classes onshore. The islands here are rolling hills covered in all different sorts of flora and fauna. We saw an iguana, two deer, some sort of red insect, and lots of ants (this definitely does not cover the biodiversity of the island but I’m just reporting the facts). Tomorrow we do our first official reef survey! I’m hoping to see lots of fish and some quality coral!
Fair winds and following seas,
PS. Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, please send my love to the dog. Also I love and miss you all.
