To the Beach!

Jaden Damassiotis & Kaleigh Spencer, East Providence High School & Northwestern Regional High School

SEA Semester

Above: Jaden, Nick, and Grace use a quadrat to study the biology of Quissett Harbor; Below: Quissett Harbor, the location of our first field study.

We got up at 7:30 and ate breakfast, did our morning chores, and headed to class. We found out more about what we would be learning here as well as read some poetry that gave several interpretations of the what the ocean is. In the afternoon we had lunch and went a beach to conduct our first studies for our group projects.

The assignment is to compare the geological, physical, chemical, or biological oceanology of different beaches and give a presentation to the class. Later we did a leadership activity where one person had to describe a structure to someone else through yes or no questions from someone else’s description. This helped us get to know our classmates better and developed our communication skills.

All in all it was a pretty interesting and fun day and it will be interesting to see what tomorrow holds.
