Swirly Swirly Cinnamon Buns: An Ode to Lauren

One of the best things on this boat is, hands down, the incredible cuisine. We are so lucky to have such an amazing cook, Lauren. She is able to whip up both healthy and nutritious meals as well as sweet and delicious snacks. She is somehow able to keep everyone's dietary restrictions in mind, which is no small feat on this boat. Even with this constant cooking over hot stoves, she does it all with a soft smile, full-throated song, and the occasional fiddling.

Let me give you an example by painting you a picture of today's afternoon snack. Before snack started, we were tasked with dropping different colored M&Ms over the side of the boat and timing how long we could see them through the water. This was done in order to approximate the light attenuation of different wavelengths of the visible spectrum through the deep, blue gyre water. We also learned about bioluminescence, complete with a skit, and the fuel system, complete with a demonstration. We worked up our appetite even more when we were told to sail handle. Everyone's stomachs were ready to be filled with Lauren's latest masterpiece.

Brittany was helping out in the galley today and had suggested making cinnamon rolls. Everyone gasped when they first appeared on deck. The gooey icing dripped over the swirls and twirls of the cinnamon, chocolate and dough. We all hustled over to get our taste of the sugary confection. To give you an idea of Lauren's adaptability to food restrictions, there were four different trays accounting for the various needs of the ship's company. From what I heard, each tray was absolutely delicious.

To top off the beauty of these cinnamon rolls, the sun began to set. The cloudscape today was quite incredible, filled with both layers of stratocumulus clouds and piles of altocumulus clouds. The fading sunlight scattered through our atmosphere in the most delightful way, reflecting off of these clouds in soft yellows, oranges, and reds. With our bellies filled with cinnamon-y goodness and our heads chockfull of new information, we watched the sun slowly set behind the horizon. It was almost time for dinner.

I have to imagine that was the best tasting cinnamon bun ever!  Hope you are having the best time and experience.  Love getting to see pictures of the trip!

I’m gaining weight just reading about these cinna buns.  But what a waste of M & Ms!  How about using Sour Skittles instead.  grin  Hope you’re having fun, O.

Olivia, your haiku knows no boundaries, from phytoplankton to cinnamon buns!  Good food can make the hardest work tolerable. Aren’t you lucky to have good and interesting work AND great food!  You w struck the jackpot!
