We have now entered stage two: The Shadow Phase. After nearly two weeks of sea life immersion aboard the Corwith Cramer we are finally beginning to learn the behind the scenes details that our Watch Officers and Assistant Scientists do every day. On deck this morning from the start of my 0700 watch, I followed around our mate Finn, who began to show me what was needed to keep the CC running safe and smooth. Just some of the things that were completed during watch were sending weather observations to the National Weather Service via satellite, taking sun positions using a sextant to find our position, plotting positions by dead reckoning, taking hourlies and boat checks, coiling lines, furling the Jib, gybing the ship twice, and we still managed to do a science deployment! Oh yeah, and this was all before 1300 lunch.
Only one hour later it was on to the next task, FIELD DAY! After a great pump up from the Capt'n himself, we set out to abolish all of the mung from our sea faring home. Listening to great tunes with a bottle of Envirox in one hand and a green rag in the other, all my shipmates and I made Mama Cramer squeaky clean. After all of the cleaning our ship got it was time to clean up ourselves with a deck shower. Then I got to lay out on the quarter deck and dry out in the sun while surrounded by water on all sides.
Sleep comes easy on the CC because of how busy it is aboard. Idle hands are never idle for too long. Now I look forward to the restoration that will come from laying in my bunk as the rolling of the ship and the sound of the sea greeting the hull lull me to sleep. Overall I would say it was a pretty great day. Here's to tomorrow!
To my wonderful family- Thank you for always supporting me in all of life's voyages. A&F XXX
