Research, Research, Research!
Woods Hole continues to exceed my expectations. These past nine weeks with the Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC) have been fun, but very demanding: coring 30 centimeters (cm) of soil, hugging trees, and clipping vegetation. Not to mention, the bug bites! Regardless, this was the adventure I was seeking.
My summer research project was to produce a carbon inventory of the WHRC yard and forest which involved both lab and field work. During fieldwork, I collected live and dead biomass at six random sites in the yard using a circular plot to clip the biomass. I also collected soil samples in the front and back yard with a metal core to sample up to 30 cm.
The last part of my project involved tree hugging! I measured tree diameters to calculate stored carbon at six different sites. Each site took about two hours to complete, depending on tree density. I am currently in the process of uploading my data into excel, making plots on R, and analyzing the carbon and nitrogen composition in the lab. I can already see my progress and it makes me very proud!
I leave Woods Hole with many memories: a course on climate change, research in a new discipline that peaked my interest, Chief Student Scientist aboard the R/V Tioga, bird tagging with NOAA Stellwagen National Marine Sanctuary, graduate school discussions, meeting with scientists to talk about careers and graduate school, and more!
