We're underway. We all arrived safely this morning to the SSV Corwith Cramer, which was tied-up at Pier 5, Brooklyn Bridge Park, under brilliant blue skies. After the SEA crew welcomed everyone aboard (there are 33 of us, SEA crew and colleagues) and stowed our gear, we started getting to know one another and learn about life on the ship. We were organized into three watch groups, where we learned about the ship's operations, line handling, boat checks, and science deployments. After lunch we cast off from Pier 5 and headed east to our present position just east of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in Gravesend Bay. We anchored here for the night, had a fabulous dinner with fresh warm rolls and other delicious things, and then went over emergency procedures for fire/emergency and abandoning the ship. Everything is very hands-on - we got out the fire hoses and used them and we put on our immersion suits, too.
Tomorrow we are expecting favorable winds as we head out of New York Harbor off the southern coast of Long Island and northeast towards Martha's Vineyard. Wonderful, interesting, thoughtful colleagues here. Hello to my family - Anne, Meadow, and Henry - and to my students back at Carleton.
