Field Trip to Lana’i Hale mountain peak
This morning started with an early hike to a historic fog drip station on the Lana'i Hale peak. There we were able to learn alongside native Lana'i students, discussing issues surrounding invasive plant growth and controversial historic land management, making connections between what we've been discussing in the classroom and the effects on the surrounding community.
We first learned, as we hiked, about the plant species that cover the mountains of Lana'i. Our TA, Zane De La Cruz shared his knowledge along the hike and mentioned efforts to restore the native ecosystem that once enveloped Lana'i.
Once we reached the summit we met students participating in a summer program on Lana'i. They shared some cool stories and fun facts about the plants we were introduced to on our morning hike. Then we were able to learn alongside them about mismanagement of land and effects of invasive species on the island habitat. We were even taught about expressing what we just learned through poetry!
We finished our eventful trip to the fog drip station by getting our hands a little dirty and removing some of the invasive species we learned about earlier in the day. I had a great time meeting the students from Lana'i and am excited to continue our adventures!
