C-268, Historic Seaports of Western Europe, Begins!
Hello! This is Captain Elliot Rappaport writing from Cork, Ireland, where it is a seasonable 60 degrees. Everyone is wearing their ski hats and adjusting to Irish summer, keeping warm while enjoying the long days that go with the high latitude.
All of the students for "Historic Seaports of Western Europe" arrived in good order yesterday afternoon, and the program is on its way, with our first 48 hours scheduled for a mixture of shipboard training and local program activities. We're docked at the town marina, really just a single floating dock just above where the River Lee divides to form the main island
of Cork City. Just upstream of us is bridge where people turn to look at us as they carry their coffee to work-- This is an ancient port, but the appearance of big sailing ships is a relatively rare event, in this day.
Down the river is the historic deepwater port of Cobh, which the students will visit with Professor Dan Brayton this afternoon. Sailing is scheduled for tomorrow at 1300, weather permitting.
Best to everyone at home, and watch this space for further news!
