Giselle here, SEA sailing intern, deckhand, and SEA alum, class S-269. We’re having a smashing first day underway here on Mamma Cramer. After sailing around Vineyard Sound, doing science stations and setting a couple staysails, we’re now headed out on Big Blue.
Today’s highlights include strawberry shortcake for morning snack, breaking out the foul weather gear for some morning drizzles, a successful first neuston tow, the sun’s glorious appearance in the late afternoon, and of course, the pods of whales and dolphins that swam alongside our ship for an hour or so. Myself and my shipmates watched with wide grins as dolphins zig-zagged over and around one another, while off in the distance, a number of humpback whales breached the surface. What a warm and charming presence these animals have. I feel lucky to share a planet with them and grateful to witness them with such wonderful shipmates.
Signing off for now. Looking forward to breaking into the routine of the 6 on, 12 off watch schedule, and learning some rad science and sailing along the way.
Sending love from all of us out on Big Blue,
- Giselle Hart
P.S. Thank you to my family for your support and making it possible for me to jump onboard at the last minute. Love is all. 143
