A visit to the DSV Alvin

Alexa Collin & Xava Abraham, King's Canterbury & Weston High School

SEA Semester

Above: Xava, Kaleigh, and Patrick add CO2 to their samples by blowing bubbles into them. Below: DSV Alvin.

Today we had a class of marine chemistry and tested Ph samples of freshwater, salt water and salt water with a high concentration of baking soda while adding CO2 for 30 second intervals to check the difference between the Ph levels each time to demonstrate the effect of climate change on the ocean.

And then, we went on WHOI’s research vessel the Atlantis and saw the world-famous submarine ALVIN. It was interesting because while getting the tour we got to see all the science and engineering labs and the equipment was explained well which helped with my understanding of marine science.
