The Island Life

Daniel Karparis, University of Maine Orono

Study Abroad at Sea

Ahoy and land ho from Grenada! My name is Dan Karparis and I am currently a junior at the University of Maine in Orono, where it is most certainly not 29°C and sunny, sorry not sorry. I am currently writing this blog for December 3rd in the library of the SSV Corwith Cramer on December 4th at around 2100 (only eight hours after leaving the beautiful and friendly island of Grenada).

Mandoo’s Friends

Courtney Dunham, Mount Holyoke College

Greetings from C-289 in Grenada! We had an action-packed day going on a tour of the island! We started off our adventure with a stretching exercise led by Cody, our steward, in the marina parking lot. We then met our tour guide, Mandoo Seales, and boarded the air-conditioned van (emphasis on the air conditioning).

A Day of Necessities and Joy!

Ciara Olmstead, Mount Holyoke College

Hi Folks! Greeting from the Corwith Cramer and Grenada. My name is Ciara Olmstead and I am a sophomore at Mount Holyoke College. I am on B Watch here on the ship, so I was not awake for our arrival in Grenada. I had been on watch from 1900 to 0100 the previous night, so I relished the opportunity to sleep in until 1030, a rare luxury.

Land Ho!

Rebecca Alisandratos, Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College

Hello! I am Rebecca Alisandratos, a senior studying Environmental Science at Hunter College in New York City. I was originally supposed to write my post near the end of our journey, but here I am instead! Surprise!!

Carla Szeplaki, Eckerd College

Hello from the SSV Corwith Cramer! My name is Carla Szeplaki and I’m a senior at Eckerd College studying marine science. It is day 4 at sea on our way to the first port stop in Grenada. B Watch began the day after breakfast at 0700. I was assigned to the lab, where we had planned to deploy the Neuston net to collect surface samples, record hourly data on salinity and seawater temperature, and more. However, as it sometimes

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! My name is Sabrina Sorace, I’m currently a junior at Eckerd College studying marine science. The Cramer has been underway for four days so far and, to be honest, it was rough for the first three days.

Learning those Lines

Emily Klimczak, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry

Today was a very early morning for A watch! We had the night shift, so we were watching over the ship from 1900-0100 (or 7 pm on Tuesday to 1 am on Wednesday). I was in the science lab for this watch. First we completed a 100-point count.

Setting Sail from St. Croix!

Jemma Dickson, College of the Atlantic

On Monday we set sail from the Christiansted pier in St. Croix, USVI! The night before, we were all woken up every hour in pairs or triples to do a boat check so we could get in the habit of performing this critical task.

Our First Squall!

Rikki Borkowski, Colgate University

Welcome to our second day underway! We are currently on a course from St. Croix to Grenada, which should take about six or seven days. We are heading generally southeast, though the strong easterly winds prevent us from going directly towards our destination.

Greg Wisener, Captain

Ahoy Dear Reader! We find ourselves in fine weather a day’s sail south of the Virgin Islands and already immersed in a glorious world of oceanic wonders! On Monday, we sailed along the north coast of St. Croix under topsail and staysails as the sun sank below the horizon.
