Whale Watch

Today we went on the Plymouth Whale Watch. While boating out to the shelf, where whales usually to go get food, we saw a calf and her mother. The mom’s name was Venom and was nursing the baby whale, Diad.

Learning Through Experience

Hello Everyone,
It is I, Cody Hoff, here to bring you another blog post from this incredible journey that we have all been on. It is incredible how the time has gone by as of lately. We had an action packed few days at the island of Nikumaroro and it was everything that I imagined it would be and then some. I was excited to swim with the black-tip reef sharks but I was amazed at how close they would get to us.

Swim call!

We’ve reached the second Sunday of our voyage on C279, but have a few more sailing days to go until reaching our final destination in Woods Hole. The weather last night was squally and the students had the chance to see one of our least-set sails, the storm trysail, in action. Thankfully, the squalls abated by morning into a beautiful, sunny day.

(The Second) Sunday Funday!

Today was a day for leisure, recreation, and taking it easy. Our day started off normally enough, except for the fact that we could finally sleep in after a long week of fun, we got up around 10:15 and ate brunch. After that we did some tie-dye, which was fairly quick.

A “mini-mate” morning

At a crisp 06:20 in the morning Alondra and I awoke to the sweet chiming of the breakfast bell. As we struggled to exit our bunks, the sleep in our eyes began to fade, and with each bite of the sticky warm banana bread, we became more and more ready for the watch that was to come.

The Great Charade

The grogginess and the weird morning taste in our mouths were what greeted us on this seemingly average morning. Languidly we pulled ourselves out of bed to a breakfast of assorted fruits and cereals. After chores, it was time to haul de-fog our eyes and haul ourselves to the Madden center in time for our first class.

Blog post number 29

Hello everyone, Lee here to bring you blog post number 29. The reality that we are nearing the end of our journey is palpable. Among the students there is a continuous stream of discussions on how to best stay in touch and the audible hope that we actually do. There’s the classic “if you’re ever in Boston” to more concrete plans being made for over winter breaks.

Reflections from the engine room

While on board this ship, there have been endless seemingly everyday occurrences that are different and wild and wonderful, a new form of spectacular around every corner. One of these more hidden corners acts as the heart of our vessel, a hummingbird feverishly working, beating its wings in the great throat of the ship.

The Noisy Ocean & Ancient Rocks

We started off our day with breakfast and went straight to Oceans and Society class. We discussed the creation of cargo ships and the impact they have on today’s society. This discussion was closely related to our lesson about marine mammal sounds and noise pollution.

One halyard away from victory…

Dearest landlubbers,
Greetings from the highest of seas! At the unfortunate hour of 0600 B-watch was jostled from their sweet dreams of riding off into the sunset aboard newly saddled whales to stand watch in the sweltering heat for 6 hours.
