Kristen Mitchell is originally from Philadelphia, PA.  She graduated from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida in 2005 with a B.S. in marine chemistry.  During her time at Eckerd, Kristen took a semester to join SEA Semester class S-189 on a trip from San Diego, CA to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.  After graduation Kristen moved to Denmark for a Fulbright Student Fellowship where she studied microbial sulfate reduction.  Kristen has moved twice with her PhD advisor during the course of her studies taking her from Utrecht University in the Netherlands, to Georgia Institute of Technology, and most recently to University of Waterloo.  Kristen has recently finished her PhD dissertation on the marine biogeochemical cycling of selenium isotopes, which she will defend in November 2012 at Utrecht University.  She is currently a research associate in the CERC Ecohydrology group at the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, ON, Canada and is excited about starting new research on plastics and beginning work in science outreach and science policy.  Kristen is eager to get away from her computer and back to the ocean.
