Tikehau Atlas Projects

Tikehau is located in the northwest part of the Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia. The first occupants arrived approximately 1200 years ago and since then the atoll’s inhabitants have relied on the resources provided by the ocean. The intimate relationship with the sea is the most significant factor in shaping Tikehau’s culture, though globalization across French Polynesia is introducing rapid changes.  Like the other low-lying Tuamotu atolls, Tikehau faces an imminent threat from sea level rise due to climatic disruption.
