Deck Crew Employment: Qualifications and Pay Scale

Chief Mate

  • USCG 200 ton (500 ton ITC) Ocean Mate license, sail endorsed*
  • 24 months as watch officer on SEA or similar vessels
  • Teaching experience
  • $2500/month with Ocean license
  • $2350/month with NC license

Second Mate

  • USCG 200 ton (500 ton ITC) Ocean Mate license, sail endorsed*
  • 12 months as watch officer on SEA or similar vessels
  • Teaching experience
  • $2100/month with Ocean license
  • $1950/month with NC license

Third Mate

  • USCG 200 ton (500 ton ITC) Near Coastal Mate license, sail endorsed*
  • 6 months as watch officer on SEA or similar vessels
  • Teaching experience
  • $1900/month with Ocean license
  • $1750/month with NC license

Mate in Training

  • MMD Able Bodied Seaman, sail endorsed**
  • 3 months as watch officer on SEA or similar vessels
  • Teaching experience
  • $1450/month

Engineer

  • MMD Able Bodied Seaman, sail endorsed***
  • 3 months as Engineer on SEA or similar vessels
  • Teaching ability
  • Pay commensurate with experience

Assistant Engineer

  • Experience and enthusiasm for engineering maintenance and teaching
  • Interest in long term work aboard SEA vessels
  • This is a volunteer position, but travel will be covered

Steward

  • O.S. or Able Bodied Seaman, sail endorsed.***
  • 3 months as Steward on SEA or similar vessels
  • Teaching ability
  • $1900/month with AB-Sail
  • $1850/month with OS

Assistant Steward

  • Experience and enthusiasm for galley work and shipboard life
  • $750/month

Deck Hand

  • amiliarity with SEA programs
  • Enthusiasm for shipboard life
  • Volunteer

NOTE: All crew must have the legal right to work in the U.S.

*A 200-ton Near Coastal Mate or Master may qualify for a Mate position on a coastal cruise with the approval of the Marine Superintendent and the Master of the vessel.

**A Mate in Training may be carried in lieu of a licensed Third Mate with the approval of the Marine Superintendent and the Master of the vessel.

***Due to USCG manning requirements, SEA strongly prefers Engineers and Stewards with sail endorsed Able Bodied Seaman MMD.

SEA Crew Increments in Addition to Base Pay

Increments are added to base pay and are given for current licenses held over and above the minimum qualifications for the position.

Ocean Master License = $100/month
Wilderness First Responder or equivalent = $25/month
Long Term Contract = $50/month

For example per month:
Chief Mate with Ocean Master License = $2500 base + $100
Steward with OS and WFR = $1850 +$25

Travel
SEA will arrange for reasonable round trip travel for crew members on long term contract (over 180 days in 12 months) or on a short term contract of at least 9 consecutive weeks.
