SEA Currents: Corwith Cramer
Junior Watch Officer
31°18.9’ N x 16°2.3’ W (North Atlantic)
Today I was the Junior Watch Officer. I have had two shadow sessions where I practiced for “JWO” but today was my first official session. There were morning science deployments and I knew there would be a lot of sail handling because of them to heave the ship to. I had my notes and my watch members, so in my mind everything was good. And it was! With the conglomerate effort of my great watch members, C Watch was able to fluently “heave to” for science and gybe to continue on our path to the Canary Islands.
As our trip winds down and I get closer to finishing my journey through the Mediterranean and the Northeast Atlantic I find myself having very mixed feelings. I have come to personally really enjoy 100 counts of the tiny organisms caught from the Neuston in the lab, with the giant swells of the great ocean adding another obstacle to the task at hand. I love walking up or down the deck and being caught off guard by how beautifully the sunset is shining on the water giving the waves orange tips. Or the moon (or lack thereof), one night I remember there was no moon and the only thing illuminating the night waves and the way was the star Sirius.
I just have seen so many awe-inspiring things and learned so much. And the people I live with! What am I going to do when I don’t hear Merry or Sophia laughing from across the boat? Or have Scott to answer all my questions about clouds? Or have to wonder how Greg ‘wins’ all the card games? Or have Maggie to crack everyone up with her sporadic puns? Or have Renee to tell me I can chill? Or hear Courtney’s Tennessee accent? Or Devin’s sass? Or can’t go to class and listen to the crazy and amazing stuff that comes out of Dr. Chuck’s mouth? I just don’t know. This has been challenging at times but all very worth it. I just don’t know how I am going to feel not having the rhythmic rocking of the ocean lulling me to and fro.
P.S. Veronica says: Happy Birthday Cam! We will celebrate when I get back! Love ya!
