SEA Currents: Robert C. Seamans
End of the Road
Docked in Pago Pago
Although I know most of your friends and families are reading this, patiently waiting your return from this incredible 5-week voyage, this blog is not so much for them, but rather this final blog is for you, my student friends.
Last night I lay on the deck after swizzle (I will leave this for you all to explain to your friends and families) silently. I was exhausted, but I could hear the chatter of all of your voices reminiscing about your favorite moments in the last five weeks. Some of you were discussing your funniest moments, your greatest challenges, things you will never forget. I still lay there silently taking it all in it didn't seem real that our trip has come to an end.
Of all the things that you remember and out of all the things you may forget, I hope that you all won't forget how unique it is that at any given moment you were the only ones out in the middle of the ocean, or on a remote island, or on top of the dog house staring into the sky, to experience that specific thing at that specific moment. There was no one else around at the time or perhaps ever in the past or in future that will have that same experience as you. To me that is pretty special.
You all will go home, as will I, and try to tell the stories that we all shared last night. We will try to explain them, but the truth is no one listening can really know what it was like to be in the middle of the Pacific Ocean surrounded by nothingness.
Together, as a group we started off as strangers, but now we all share something that is so unique. The memories from this trip could not have been cultivated in any other setting or with any other group and they are something we all can cherish forever. I can't even remember what it was like to be a stranger, because now I only wonder when will be the next time I see my new friends and family.
So this is to you: the students of S-274. Thank you for all of the laughs. Thank you for the late nights. Thank you for the early mornings. Thank you for the middle of the blistering hot afternoons. Thank you for the adventures and the challenges. And most of all thank you for all of the incredible memories that I know I will never forget but will always be trying to explain.
Much love my friends, I only hope to see you all again soon.
