![]() William Snedden, W-23Alumni: W-23 Occupation: High School Science Teacher (Physics and Environmental Systems right now, Physical Science and Biology for the last 6 years) Northbrook High School, Spring Branch ISD, Houston, Texas From 1981 to 2000 I worked as an oil and gas exploration geologist and exploration research geologist, for Citgo, Getty, and Texaco (now Chevron). For the first ten years I specialized in structural geology, seismic data interpretation and moodeling, then spent two years in London working on Russian oil and gas fields, and then another decade in Houston specializing in remote sensing for exploration and environmental mapping. I'm still a licensed professional geologist in Texas (#4219). My new career is far more challenging (86% Hispanic students, and yo no hablo Espanol) with about half the pay of oil and gas, but three times the vacation (do the math!). I know basic science formulas - teaching Ohm's Law tomorrow. Westward 23 was a special cruise, summer 1975, with shore component at the Cornell/UNH Shoals Marine Lab (I never saw the Woods Hole campus until my 30th SEA reunion!), then a cruise around Nova Scotia and Newfoundland with Navy Hydrographers looking to record sounds bounced off of as many different types of whale as we could find - a sonar library for Navy sonarmen. I had just finished my freshman year at Cornell, changing major from economics to geology, and most of my shipmates were seniors studying biology & marine science. That cruise had many highlights, especially fishing the running mackerel off Sable Island, then body surfing with sea lions (lost a pair of glasses there). After SEA, During the 80's and 90's I helped raise two daughters, now 23 and 30. I've recently remarried and bought a house in Houston; I'm getting good at gardening again, as well as at home repair. I've been singing in one choral group or another since 9th grade; my wife and I sing in an "early music" group called Piping Rock Singers (www.pipingrock.org); I am "bi-sectional," both tenor and bass - I "sing both ways". I read historical novels, especially naval ones. I learned to sail in the Boy Scouts, then with SEA on a grander scale, and most recently during summers on my brother's 36' Catalina (Cayuga Lake) in Ithaca, NY. I recycle plastic bottles, aluminum cans, glass, paper, steel. |
