Emelia DeForce
Age: 31
First timer with SEA!
Occupation: Graduate student at UMass Boston studying microbial ecology
Hometown: Woods Hole, MA
Emelia is on the brink of finishing up her graduate degree in microbiology at University of Massachusetts Boston and is currently looking for a post doctoral position in microbial ecology. She has been on several other research cruises in the past, including trips with R/V Atlantis and Alvin in the Pacific, and one with R/V Thomas G. Thompson in the South Pacific. Being on the ocean is where it's at for her!
She was involved with collecting and preserving the plastic pieces during the Plastics at SEA Expedition and anticipates some very interesting results to questions surrounding the role that microbes play in plastics at sea. She has been working on some of the preliminary data from the samples at sea during her stay at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and hopes to report about them in the near future. She can be contacted at emelia.deforce@umb.edu.
