Heidi Hirsh is from Gig Harbor, WA.  She graduated magna cum laude from the University of San Diego in May 2012 with a B.A. in marine science and a minor in environmental science. Heidi sailed as a student with SEA Semester: Sustainability in Polynesian Island Cultures and Ecosystems (SPICE) class S-233.  She developed a passion for marine science research in high school, learning how to SCUBA dive in the Tacoma Narrows.  Heidi pursued further research as an undergraduate studying the anthropogenic effects on water quality in Bahia Magdalena, BCS, Mexico and Mbarara, Uganda, as well as completing an honors thesis project in which she studied the responses of biomarker proteins to organic and heavy metal stressors in the common white clam, Chione californiensis. After this expedition Heidi plans to submit her research manuscript for publication and finish her applications for graduate school.  Heidi is thrilled to sail aboard Seamans again and looks forward to practicing new culinary skills in the galley!
