Dr. Amy Bower’s groundbreaking research centers of deep ocean currents. Legally blind since her mid-20s, she uses adaptive technology and has become an advocate for the visually impaired. In 2015, her team, “Wind Whisperers,” won the World Blind Sailing Championship in Chicago. Among Dr. Bower’s many honors, she received the Unsung heroine of Massachusetts Award from the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women in 2010, and the Henry Bryant Bigelow Chair for Excellence in Oceanography at WHOI in 2014. In 2003 and 2004, she held the Doherty Chair in Ocean Studies at Sea Education Association where she now serves as an Overseer.
