Reaching Out: The Importance of Networking and Community

After all, the SEA experience continues after you step off our ships!

SEA remains one of the few term abroad programs to establish an active alumni program, currently with over 7,300 members. Because of the inspirational nature of the SEA experience, our alumni remain steadfastly loyal to the organization, our ships, and each other. For many alumni, the SEA experience opens new doors academically, personally, or professionally. It's not uncommon to hear alumni mention that their time at SEA inspired their current profession and that they want to return the favor by helping the SEA community as much as possible. For alumni looking to network or seek professional advice, our community remains a fantastic resource to connect and build relationships. The primary method of communicating with others is through the Alumni Directory.

The SEA Alumni Directory is an online service for alumni to keep in touch with shipmates and SEA by maintaining current contact information. The directory also serves as a networking and career service resource. To join, simply log in to create a profile and keep your information up-to-date.

Many alumni volunteer as Mentors and are eager to advise in their chosen career fields or help focus job searches. In addition, Mentors open the door to networking and building professional relationships.

The Bulletin Board features jobs and internship opportunities posted by SEA alumni and staff. Updated weekly, it is quickly becoming a go-to career service destination. Understanding the caliber of character and skill level required to complete the SEA program, many of our alumni professionals prefer hiring and working with other SEA alumni. We also encourage alumni to post jobs and internships that they wish to share with the community.

SEA Alumni Events, held regionally, are a great way to keep abreast of SEA news and reconnect with or meet new shipmates. If you are new to an area, events are a great way to meet people or establish personal networking connections with shared interests and experiences. Bring your business cards and, most importantly, be ready to share your SEA stories!

Networking Tips:

Networking is about creating and cultivating professional relationships, rather than asking for a job or aggressively self-promoting. We encourage alumni curious about a profession, questioning graduate school, or new to an area to get in touch with Mentors and start asking questions. Remember to follow up with Mentors and always, always thank them! Please visit Helpguide.org for articles on networking and other career advice.
