SEA Expedition: The Ship
SSV Robert C. Seamans
Robert C. Seamans
Launched in 2001, the Robert C. Seamans is a 134-foot steel brigantine and is the most sophisticated oceanographic research/sailing school vessel ever built in the United States. Life at sea aboard the Robert C. Seamans is comfortable but Spartan. There are no private cabins, but each participant will have a bunk that measures approximately 8 feet long, three feet deep and three feet high. The ship operates 24 hours per day, and participants will have the opportunity to join the ten professional crew in navigation and operation of all aspects of the ship. Meals are served family-style. The ship is not air-conditioned and may be warm below-decks during the day (January is summer in the Southern Hemisphere). Overall, it is an intimate, yet comfortable environment on a ship designed for long passage making.
